Ethiopia: What US$280 million can do
At least 7.9 million people need humanitarian assistance across Ethiopia because of drought, disease outbreaks, loss of livestock, and displacement due to an upsurge in violence along the border between Oromia and Somali regions. The Government and humanitarian partners have asked for US$280.4 million to help the worst-affected of the affected people covered by the Ethiopia Humanitarian and Disaster Resilience Plan (HDRP) over the next six months. The thrust of the plan is to scale up response and reach 1 million people who have been displaced by violence over the past year.
“The Government of Ethiopia has shown commendable leadership in seeking durable solutions for the displaced, but there is still a high need to expand the humanitarian response,” said Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa-Onochie, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia.
